[similar verbs] 수정하다 vs. 교정하다 vs. 조정하다

They all have the meaning of correction or making something go in the right way. The difference is:

 

수정 - 수(修): cultivate, better, polish, trim, or improve

수양(修養) = self-discipline

 

교정 - 교(矯): correct, rectify, straighten, or tighten the error, distortion, or mishavarior

교도소(矯導所) = jail

 

조정 - 조(調): adjust or make something harmonious, even, or soft

조화(調和) = harmony

 

 

 

In addition, the three words have many homonyms.

 

 

수정하다

1. 수정(修正)하다: 바로잡아 고치다. to correct or modify something to make it get better

 

나는 에세이를 여러 번 수정했다. I modified my essay again and again.

정부가 그 계획을 전면적으로 수정했다. The government completely changed/modified the plan.

 

 ➞  sometimes ‘수정하다’ is used for a mere change, without the meaning of [to make sth get better]

 

 

2. 수정(修訂)하다: 글이나 글자의 잘못된 점을 고치다. to correct typos or mistakes

 

나는 에세이의 오타들을 수정했다. I corrected typos in my essay.

 

 

 

 

교정하다

 

1. 교정(矯正)하다

 

1) 틀어지거나 잘못된 것을 바로잡다. to correct something that is twisted or goes wrong

 

   치아를 교정하다 correct one’s teeth ➞ 나는 치아 교정을 시작했다. I started correcting my teeth.

 

2) 교도소나 소년원 따위에서 재소자의 잘못된 품성이나 행동을 바로잡다. to correct someone’s mischief or bad nature in a prison or young offender institution

 

not used very often in verbs but in nouns.

 ➞  교정 행정 = Administration of Correction

 

 

2. 교정(校訂)하다: 남의 문장 또는 출판물의 잘못된 글자나 글귀 따위를 바르게 고치다. to correct typos or mistakes in other’s article

 

나는 형의 에세이에 있는 오타들을 교정했다. I corrected typos in my brother’s essay.

 

 

 

 

조정하다

 

1. 조정(調整)하다: 어떤 기준이나 실정에 맞게 정돈하다. to organize or arrange something according to certain criteria or circumstances. = adjust

 

출근 시간을 아침 7시로 조정했다. My company adjusted the attendance time to 7 a.m.

영점조정 = zero in a weapon

 

 

2. 조정(調停)하다: 분쟁을 중간에서 화해하게 하거나 서로 타협점을 찾아 합의하도록 하다. = mediate, conciliate, or settle differences/disputes/problems

 

그는 직원과 경영진 사이의 입장 차이를 조정했다. He mediated the differences between staff and management.
