* Principle: ① From top to bottom ② From left to right
ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, and ㅉ, which represent tense sounds, are called 'doubled consonants(쌍자음)'. For example, ㄱ is referred to as '기역[gi-yuk]', and then its doubled consonant ㄲ as '쌍기역[ssang-gi-yuk]'.
Just write a consonant ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅅ, or ㅈ once more next to the basic one, then that's 쌍자음.
Let's practice with some easy words.
- 새[sae]: bird
- 얘기[yae-gi]: story. Short form of '이야기[i-yea-gi]'.
- 세모[se-mo]: triangle
- 예보[ye-bo]: forecast
- 왕[wang]: king
- 왜[wae]: why
- 외국인[we-guk-in]: foreigner
- 원[won]: won (Korean currency)
- 웨딩[we-ding]: wedding (there are few Korean words that contain ㅞ.)
- 위기[wi-gi]: emergency
- 꼬마[kko-ma]: kid (more cute than '아이[a-i]')
- 땅[ddang]: land
- 빵[bbang]: bread (=Portuguese 'pão')
- 씨[ssi]: seed (similar to the pronunciation of 'si' in Italian)
- 쪽[jjok]: page
